Wraps are a great way to roll up some of your favorite sandwich ingredients. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to make these look quite appetizing! We would love to talk endlessly about all the healthy ingredients that can make your wrap tasty, special and healthy. Instead we’re just going to scratch the surface and rap about wraps.
Wraps, lavashes, thin rolled pitas, burritos, soft tortillas are all similarly styled flatbreads. These edible “covers” are often made from wheat, but may contain other grains from ancient to otherwise. Some wraps may be: gluten free, Non-GMO, organic and even paleo friendly. Whatever your dietary needs or desires, wraps are almost equivalent to two slices of bread. They are more dense than bread. Depending on the wrap, that might mean more nutrient density, and more fiber.
It is worthwhile to be a smart consumer with wraps. Just like many foods, wraps range from good to not-so-healthy. Here is a rating of a variety of wraps from various respected nutrition authorities:
Knock Your Sprouts Off! – By SimplyNature (Staff fave) – This wrap blends of variety of grains, keeps the calories on the low side, has decent fiber, limited ingredients, and is Non-GMO. www.fooducate.com gives them a B+ grade!
LaTortilla Factory (Low Carb) – Weighing in with just 6 Net Carbs and a decent dose of protein, this wrap works well for low carbers and is Non-GMO. Many great recipes on their website, too. Very much loved by Eating Well Magazine.
Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Tortillas – These ingredients are ready for the red carpet: Organic Sprouted Wheat, Filtered Water, Organic Sesame Seeds, Organic Sprouted Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Barley, Organic Sprouted Millet, Organic Sprouted Lentils, Organic Sprouted Spelt, Sea Salt. You might need a coupon though – a bit pricey.
